Do I need a physician referral to receive Occupational Therapy?
In the state of New York, neither a referral nor a prescription is required to do an occupational therapy evaluation.
Pursuant to Education Law, section 7901, however, a referral or prescription is required for treatment. That is, to implement an OT treatment plan, under certain circumstances, you must have a referral or prescription from a licensed health care provider acting within his or her scope of practice. A treatment program designed to restore function, shall be rendered on the prescription or referral of a physician, nurse practitioner or other health care provider acting within his or her scope of practice pursuant to this title. When required, prescriptions and referrals establish an important link between the patient’s/client’s occupational therapist and his/her primary healthcare provider because they set forth a client’s diagnosis and provide direction as to the frequency or type of therapy required. The referral/prescription becomes part of the record which the occupational therapist must maintain for each patient/client he or she serves.
For this reason, we will ask you for a physician’s referral or prescription to keep on file for our records, and so that it can submitted to a third-party payor if you wish or to your insurance by you for possible out of network benefits.

Why you should consider Escobar Occupational Therapy Services & Consulting?
A business is only as good as its employees. When a company advertisement boasts of a client-first approach, exceptional therapy services and highly-trained therapists, dedication and commitment to innovation, and asks you to trust in their abilities to provide the best quality services in the area, they are implying that you, your child or loved one will be receiving therapy from a therapist who is well experienced and an expert in your specific area of need. If you are lucky, and/or if the integrity of the company is sound, that is exactly what you will receive. The reality of it, however, is that you or your family member:
- Will most likely get the therapist who is assigned to your area (or who has an opening on his/her schedule, if the setting is a busy out-patient clinic, in-patient hospital or rehab facility);
- Could be paired up with someone having limited experience and knowledge to accurately assess and treat your or your loved one’s individual needs;
- Could quite possibly be passed on to the more cost-effective direct care of a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA), who would work under the supervision and direction of the evaluating OT; or that
- The assigned therapist could be a new grad in need of mentoring that is oftentimes limited, inadequate, or unavailable. At Escobar Occupational Therapy Services & Consulting I can guarantee you that you and your loved ones will be under the capable care of an occupational therapist with 28+ years of experience and expertise.
